Evaluation of Techniques for Categorizing Group Membership of White-Tailed Deer
نویسنده
چکیده
We studied sexual segregation, particularly patterns of group membership for white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), in Lincoln County, Minnesota, USA, to evaluate current techniques used to categorize animals when studying sexual segregation. We categorized group membership according to Hirth (1977) and grouped individuals using our solitary categorization method. Our solitary method was most sensitive to changes in behavior and physiology exhibited by reproductively active females and their association with other deer during sexual segregation. Social affiliation and contact patterns among white-tailed deer in disparate landscapes: implications for disease transmission.
In social species, individuals contact members of the same group much more often than those of other groups, particularly for contacts that could directly transmit disease agents. This disparity in contact rates violates the assumptions of simple disease models, hinders disease spread between groups, and could decouple disease transmission from population density. Social behavior of white-taile...

We evaluated population management programs for controlling chronic wasting disease (CWD) in wild white-tailed deer in Illinois between November 2002 and March 2008. The intervention consisted of measures of deer removal from three deer population control programs: Illinois Department of Natural Resources culling, deer population control permits and nuisance deer removal permits. We included in...
متن کاملEvaluating Transmission of Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus to Cattle by Exposure to Carcasses of Persistently Infected White- tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus)
Infections with bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) clinically analogous to cattle are described in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), but the epidemiologic role of persistently infected (PI) white-tailed deer is unknown. Persistently infected white-tailed deer shed BVDV, maintaining BVDV in groups of deer. Survival of PI white-tailed deer is reduced, and clinically ill or dead PI deer ...

The suitability of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) as hosts for the cattle ticks Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) annulatus, has been well documented. These ticks have a wide host range, and both transmit Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina, the agents responsible for bovine babesiosis. Although this disease and its vectors have been eradicated from th...
متن کاملTransmission of bovine viral diarrhea virus among white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus)
Cattle persistently infected (PI) with bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), a pestivirus in the family Flaviviridae, are an important source of viral transmission to susceptible hosts. Persistent BVDV infections have been identified in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), the most abundant free-ranging ruminant in North America. As PI deer shed BVDV similarly to PI cattle, maintenance of ...
